Checking out their past!!

19 Oct

I’ve recently been passed the details of a website; which drew two very opposite responses from me when I first looked at it.

It’s not hosted in the UK and that’s something I think makes what they do easier for them, as if it was hosted in the UK all sorts of pressure groups/politically correct issues would raise their heads.

Right to privacy was my first thought.

BUT then I remembered the horrible things I have been reading about in the news recently, child abductions, murders, burglaries etc etc & wondered if a site like this doesn’t hold a key (or at least a semblance) of a key to prevention of these atrocities?

If you knew your details were going to be released for anyone to see with the click of a button, wouldn’t you think twice?

Also as a parent, I would rather be able to “look-up” something if a I have a “feeling” about someone & allay my fears than be met with the standard “We are not allowed to divulge” response from the Police (due to confidentiality).

Surely anyone breaking a law (ONLY those who are tried & found guilty I hasten to add) gives up their right to confidentiality?

This would also be a godsend if you were looking for a babysitter/Au-pair; don’t you think?

However when I thought about it more, I began to see a positive for small business application also.

White collar crime is definitely on the rise due to the current economic situation, with corporate crimes, Ponzi schemes, &  insider trading seemingly the norm in some business circles. Also for small businesses, wouldn’t a website like this be extremely useful for checking out potential employees/business partners who may be less than truthful about their past?

For small businesses any half-truth / left out bit of information has the capability of being devastating & of impacting negatively on your bottom-line!

One of the most common ommitions in the UK is Concealing a criminal record – The most important reason that many companies perform background checks is to maintain a safe workplace or to mitigate risk. Compliance is also a key reason why some companies do background checks. Some industries, such as financial services and healthcare, require employers to obtain criminal background information on applicants, often by job type.

Currently in the UK  we have to rely on expensive & long winded CRB checks, Which don’t always work in the way they were intended, as the recent J Saville scandal has shown, (he would’ve passed a CRB check with flying colours).

So why not have a bank of this information available on-line?

Again, is it not in our (the public, the small businessman/woman) interest?

So, I had a good look over this website & it not only lists all the info you could need – obtainable from legally available information, it also gives you features & articles such as Jobs available in the Prison service (Admittedly this is aimed at the US prison service) But again, its made me wonder whether this is an avenue someone in the UK should explore?

Let me know your thoughts?
