3) Quick Tips for your Social Media campaigns

You need a good Social Media strategy nowadays.

With Consultants like us, creating great content for our clients; small businesses are now, more than ever needing to ensure their Social Media is relevant & engaging;

And while I will still maintain, employing a professional is a much better (& safer) option, here is some help for all you “go it aloners” out there.

 

1)         Pick Your platforms carefully – not every business needs to be on every social media platform.Logos

Some businesses should be on visually rich sites such as Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube, while others  are more suited to the text only “quick-info” style of Twitter. You MUST understand your audience, do some research, have a look at what they are interacting with, before making the plunge, as a badly managed Social Media account can be detrimental to how prospective clients / customers perceive you.

 

2)        Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should! aka – Avoid the hard sell!

The main thing I try to explain to my small businesses is that Social Media is not about selling.  Your followers & friends will not thank you for appearing in their timeline extolling the virtues of your business, time after time & they will “switch -off”. I know we are all proud of our business & want to shout it from the rooftops BUT your Twitter / Facebook is probably not the best place to do that over & over again. A little bit of self-promo is ok once in a while, but try to make your overall strategy about enhancing your followers experience, encouraging them to share out the information you are bringing to them. remember although you see a screen when you post your content, the recipients are human & want to be spoken to as such.

3)         Dont think its a free for all online!

This is by no means a “free” marketing tool. In fact Social media is expensive! Just ask those people or companies who have been sued or have been ruined because Tweets sent were deemed to be offensive. Some famous examples of a Social Media storm have included – Courtney Love , Marlon Wayans , US HighSchool & these cases. Be careful what you post, make sure you are being truthful.

8 Social Media Terms you NEED to know

1. APP –

The term App is short for application. Which is a shortened version of “Application Program”

An App is a small program that is usually free-standing but runs alongside an existing platform, such as Facebook or Twitter & brings an addition element to that platform, such as a

game app, like app, follower app – You can also quite easily have a custom App developed for you – One which will do practically whatever you would like it to – such as record visitors, send out company info, take information etc.

2. CONTENT –

Content is the information you place on your social media platforms, such as videos, blogs, images & text. Good quality, original content is key to gaining trust from followers.

3. ENGAGEMENT –

On SocialMedia, the engagement is how much interaction there is in relation the Content (see 2.) you are posting. this is usually measured in “Likes” , “Followers, “Shares” etc.

4. INFOGRAPHIC –

This is an illustration that shows information, especially numbers & statistics, in a pictorial format.

5. SEO –

Search Engine Optimisation, the process of making websites content visible to the audience, usually via carefully worded posts on blogs, tagged pictures, images & content.

6. TAG –

A word or mark that appears on a photo etc that is designed to let your followers or friends know what you are doing or where you are , or indeed about a product / service you like.

7.  USER GENERATED CONTENT –

This is content (see point 2.) that is produced by the general public,rather than by the company or people acting officially on behalf of the company.

8. WEBINAR –

A live meeting or presentation, sent out to “attendees” via the internet. These can be interactive & viewers can participate, asking questions.

Social Media – Manageable or not?

The number of Social Media channels a Small Business had to look at utilising for marketing purposes has skyrocketed in the last few years & consequentially the number of ways to  make a mistake, has skyrocketed too.

Once upon a time, you could concentrate on one or two channels & know that your customers & potential revenue stream were there, but now, it seems a new portal / platform is appearing almost weekly. Now even the most adept marketers are faced with the unenviable task of determining the most suitable channels from dozens & dozens for each client they are assisting.

So how can YOU, the Small Business owner be expected to maintain your own social media marketing strategy & still run your business effectively.

Well if you follow these quick tips, you can achieve a semblance of balance.

Of course it would always be preferable to get a professional in to help; However being one myself, I understand small business & am always here to help as & when you are ready to take that step. But for now – Heres some help.

Facebook –

1) Ensure you have a “Business Page” – Don’t be tempted to use your personal page

2) Brand the header & have a comprehensive “About us” section

3) Respond daily to comments / posts on your wall

4) Don’t Automate any function – it looks & lazy & feels like you are cheating your customers.

Twitter –

1)  Respond to Comments & RT’s daily 

2) Post at least 2-4 Tweets daily, Thanking new followers & Linking to your sites

3) Don’t Automate any function – it looks & lazy & feels like you are cheating your customers. 

 

Pinterest – 

Active-Pinterest-icon1) Create at least  6 – 8 boards

2) Re-pin at least 4- pins daily

3)  Engage with the above channels – making sure you follow their Pinterest channels too

4) Don’t Automate any function – it looks & lazy & feels like you are cheating your customers

You can see I have said DON’T automate – The reason I say this is explained more Auto-Tweets a BIG FAIL!

The above should take no more than an hour or two to do well – Which is ok, if you have that time & if you know what you are doing. 

Personally, I would suggest using someone like Rocoja to help.

Having a Dinner Party?

I wanted to write something helpful, something which will give the small businesses out there something tangible to grasp & do that will actually make a quick difference…

I was thinking of a “Spring clean your Social Media” type post, but then I realised I was slipping back into my old 80’s/90’s “recruitment agency” ways.

Re-hashing the old type of Bubble / Starburst adverts that used to appear on adverts or in agency windows at certain times of the year with gaudy headlines such as “New Year – New Career” or “Spring Clean your CV” …

I then thought, I wonder if anyone else has had this thought & out came good old Google & yep you guessed it, a good many Social media companies have done it!  Image

I don’t blame them, It’s an easy-out. A good 300-400 word blog can be created from a few tit-bits of common sense, head-lined under one of the above style head-lines, which are certainly attention grabbing & if I have taught my readers anything, its GRAB THAT ATTENTION QUICK!!!!

However, I still want to impart some helpful ideas, so rather than blind you with stars & bubbles, here’s a quick hit list – if you have the time (It shouldn’t take too long) do at least 1 of these.

If you don’t have the time, employ someone like me to do it, (Or simpler, just contact ME & I will do it 🙂   ) .

I promise you, handled correctly, these little things really do help.

1)    Make sure your “About Us” page is current & relevant – This includes the one on your website & on any directories you are listed on – this should also include Facebook & Twitter & any & all Social Media Sites…

2)    Check your links – Even your photo’s, these should link somewhere! If they come up in searches (Such as on Google search) if a person clicks on it, wouldn’t you rather they link to you than to a generic holding page? This is achievable quite simply..

3)    Make sure you are updating / informing your customers about your products / services regularly, check your social media/directories & update them. There’s nothing worse than a Facebook page or Twitter with only a few followers / Likes that tweets or Posts like crazy for a few days then disappears… ps Google hates it too!

The main thing I say to most of my clients is blog blog blog!

The Social media & Web presence advice tidbits above are pretty generic, these things can help pretty much all businesses’, however a blog is like opening up your home & holding a dinner party.Image
